    Plague Doctor and Leper
“Is it genuine concern… or just morbid curiosity?”

    …. *slinks back in*

Hey. I don’t actually own this game yet (I’m waiting to get a job before making more Steam purchases) but I love the art style and characters. Like, so much. SO MUCH.

Might do more art later, but this one wouldn’t leave me alone. She’s probably just trying to get samples of Leper’s disease to weaponize it later and masking it as care. But hey, at least someone’s not completely repulsed by him. Poor guy. :c

Edit: Appending the other pics to the OP here for ease of finding.

A failed attempt to sh-post on Tumblr that I gave up on
Just popping in to share this. I was originally gonna do multiple trolly animations for Tumblr based on either memes or in-jokes, but I got disheartened part-way through because cleaning up lines on animations is a pain. So here, you get this rough animation instead. I’m still pretty happy with it considering how much I hate animating. 8S

How horrific I assume the Leper's condition is under the mask and rags
    “Truly, I am a wretched thing…”

    I promise I will probably eventually draw more of the characters. Sometime. =3=;;

Baaasically my headcanon for the extent of the Leper’s condition, based on a combination of photo references and a little research. Not saying anyone else needs to agree that it’s this horrific. I’m just morbid.

It’s one of those things, like brown recluse bites, that isn’t that bad provided living conditions are sanitary and treatment is quick… but in areas with poor hygienic practices, the damage can easily give way to secondary infections and… far more grotesque disfigurement. Darkest Dungeon’s setting doesn’t strike me as particularly hygienic.

This is more my ‘usual’ style, if a bit on the sloppy, sketchy side… though, to be honest, I don’t really have a concrete style to call my own; I just draw however I feel like drawing. Darkest Dungeon’s thick lines and heavily-shadowed/tenebristic style is just fun, hence using it for other pics.

Mild model-modifications for the Bec de Corbin team. Yaknow, my fanfic.
Quick (…ish, I think this took 4 hours, which is way too long for the quality, wah, though I guess it’d be an hour per character which isn’t that bad in retrospect) sketch of the main team from my ‘fic.

I mean, I naturally just sorta assume they’re the game defaults, but if I were to ever want to draw them interacting with other individuals who ARE the game defaults, I figured I’d have slightly modified versions as backup designs.

Shandre is the only one who’s not a default by… well, default, as she’s explicitly described in the story as wearing a sanitarium robe with a bandit cowl.

The Scholar's Beast. Click through for fullsize.
Click-through image for full-size if you don’t mind huge.

Assuming the Occultist doesn’t worship The Worst Thing in the depths, this is what my imagination assumes the eldritch beast he made his pact with looks like, based on the appearance of his attacks and some improv. Wanted to try making it something that looks sleek, at least in contrast to The Worst Thing.

The best way to draw lots of tentacles is don’t.

Not art, just notes to append to the last one.
Yeah, I like the idea of eldritch turf-wars, too. In fact, I have a small, temporary headcanon about the various higher beings in the setting in lieu of anything official being set down on them. I can imagine these crazy-powerful and beyond-comprehensible beings sorta playing a cosmic board-game, with mortal lives as their expendable pawns.

These are the notes I’d made, though I haven’t added to them in a while due to extraneous circumstances:

-= The Deep One / The Worst Thing =-
The dark beast of the pit, unearthed by the Ancestor. Likely sealed in place by the Light and Flame in ages past, now released to wreak havoc once again. Its very existence on the physical plane warps the fabric of reality, causing ripples of dimensional instability, allowing through more of its seething darkness, resulting in spreading disease and decay as the conventional world buckles under its influence.

This instability also shakes the foundations of time itself, dissociating its immediate locality from the world’s timeline. Letters and locals departing from this undulating sphere of influence are not guaranteed to remain in the era from which they originated, but one thing is certain. Should those letters and requests for aid fall into the hands of those searching for adventure, it takes but mere contact with the materials originating from that otherworldly estate to guarantee their return to it, regardless of what time they started in.

Whether or not they can leave it… well, that’s another story, entirely…

    -= The Inquisitor / The Scholar’s Beast =-
The creature with whom the Occultist made his pact, signing over a portion of his own soul in an effort to gain understandings of the world beyond the mortal. The Inquisitor isn’t a terribly wrathful individual, merely boasting near-limitless condescension and a morbid, sometimes destructive curiosity as to how such meager and insignificant creatures manage to survive on their tiny speck amongst the stars.

Once eager to bring its own brutal manner of enlightenment to the world by driving its human disciple to the construction of a more substantial portal between the worlds, it was overcome by jealousy upon finding out that other creatures of its ilk had arrived before it. Instead of seeking humanity’s destruction, it has instead endeavored to explore how humans cope under direct contact with the maddening beyond, while all the same time seeking to drive its rivals from the world so that it might have it to itself some day in the far future, provided these tiny, seemingly powerless creatures don’t prove to have more mettle to them than initially anticipated.

-= The Light and the Flame =-
An eldritch abomination not unlike the others. Cast from starfire instead of darkness, it boasts the same unimaginable power in a different form. Unlike the others, it has already laid a claim in the world from a long-lost ritual summoning, but instead of seeing humans as a worthless race only fit for consumption or servitude, the Light and the Flame saw humanity and their world as pitiful and begging for protection and preservation in an unfathomably large and cruel multiverse. As such, it directly opposes other eldtritch beings who seek out Earth for conquest or destruction.

In an effort to preserve the humans’ world and perception and allow them to continue on with their tiny lives in peace, the Light and the Flame withdrew into the aether, content to not interfere directly, masking its presence and only granting its power in small portions to those who seek it out. It hasn’t gone completely unnoticed, though, as its mere presence is enough to draw the ire of other eldritch conquerors, who step up their assaults in an effort to purge yet another one of their rivals.

As its name implies, the Light and the Flame isn’t a singular entity, but a Duality. The Light encompasses its lust for preservation by peaceable means, such as healing and protection, while the Flame deals in punishment and retaliation and ritual cleansing by destroying impurity.

A book safe I made from a $1 book from a thrift store, and decorated to look thematic. I’ve never tried to make something like this before, so I’m pretty happy with the result, tacky additions aside.

Yes, those are Giant Microbe minis of syphilis, rabies, and diarrhea/the runs. Meant to be a smiling nod to the ‘bug’ of opening books and getting a disease from them. I decided to decorate it with swinefolk symbols because it seemed fitting for a disease-carrying tome to be associated with the filth of the Warrens.

I made this hoping to mail it to Red Hook as a silly joke, but they won’t return my email asking if they have a mailing address or P.O. Box, so I guess I have a decorative swinefolk tome/book safe now. Maybe I’ll still give it to them if I can ever get my butt to a convention, though the ‘surprise’ will be lost.

This was something I meant to doodle up for a while. Just establishing in-character differences between Campion (from Ravenmoor) and Xavien (from BdC), versus the ‘default’ one that I already sketched. They’re from different continuities and probably wouldn’t ever meet unless [REDACTED] were to get involved, but I figured the difference would reflect the clear differences in their personalities and situations.

Xavien is a bit violently self-loathing and defaults to masochism on an affliction check, so his damage is a lot nastier. His habit of keeping to himself and rarely taking off his mask for treatment makes his facial disfigurement a lot more pronounced. He’s been alone for many, many years, so the damage built up over time with only his own barely-sufficient self treatment, in conjunction with his more recent emotional issues.

Campion, by contrast, is a bit more meticulous, so while the tissue directly affected is obvious, the physical damage and secondary infections are much less of a problem. He also teeters back and forth between how much he lets the sanitarium and Fergant take care of him, but the fact that he occasionally forgets how much he hates having other people touch him means he does, in fact, occasionally get help with symptom treatment in lieu of any available cure for this setting’s version of the disease. He’s also been traveling with Fergant for years before they arrived at the hamlet, so he’s had someone to make sure he’s not neglecting his own care. Even with their history together, though, they don’t have much of a relationship outside of Fergant seeing him as a prime experimental patient and bodyguard, and Campion seeing her as an annoyingly clingy opportunist with health benefits that he nevertheless feels obligated to protect.

    Thanks, you two!

And as for tender moment, ahahaha, I mean, as tender as a game like this could be. I more or less intended it to go either way; whether it is meant to be a ‘moment’ or just a necessary treatment, it doesn’t matter.

In regards to actual emotional involvement, I do have a short ‘fic that I wrote last night, but I am super iffy on its pacing and its subject matter, so I’m not sure I quite want to share it… I’m generally happy with it, but I’m not sure it’s… appropriate. Not, like, SFW-style appropriateness (though given it takes place in the brothel, there are moments where it looks like it’s going to go somewhere inappropriate, but never does), just… in the sense that it might be too sappy and involved for the game in its current, incomplete state.

…And the fact that I don’t own the game and don’t have access to all the character quotes for every given circumstance to make a full personality judgment call. I’m just going off of the LPs I’m watching, while keeping my eyes on things like camp skill descriptions and Guild biographies.

I’m a sucker for character development. As much as I love the in-expedition banter, I would love to see official documents about the adventurers interacting with one another outside of their expeditions, or interacting with other townsfolk.

Excellent art. Not only because the original style of the game is considered, but also because of the scene having… Depth, perhaps. You know, there’s a lots of simple arts with simply “a character doing something” on it. Or just standing in some cliched pose. Even if they’re very goodly drawn, they often lack something special which makes you want to look at them more than a single time.

This one has it all – style, atmosphere, depth. I can’t describe it adequately. It’s not a masterpiece, of course, but it’s really, really good… And I consider myself as a pretty picky person, mind you.

…Wouldn’t you mind if I steal the Leper from this image for an avatar? =)

    Yesss, the camp scenes definitely inspired this… in fact, it was the unique camp skills of the Leper that drew me to the character the most just after his heartbreaking Afflicted portrait. I am a sucker for tragic characters. =3=;

Sure, go ahead and use it! I would have used it, myself, but I think the Plague Doctor fits a bit more for now.

I personally see all the characters having a lot of depth despite being ‘expendable’… it’s the same sentiment that originally drew me to TF2 well back in the day when it first came out. ‘Nameless’ soldiers that none the less have a ton of personality and make me wonder at their backstories. They must have stories to tell, beyond but not to the exclusion of what kinds of Hell you put them into through via the game’s progression alone.

It’d be neat if this could be fleshed out in the future by the devs, to have the character interactions with one another played up, get people really involved with them all. Even if it’s just optional side material (like TF2’s “Meet The” videos, or their other, more ambitious animation projects for that game, or even their comics).

I think that the characters would be a major draw when this game gets much closer to completion. :> It’d draw more people in who might not otherwise be interested in a turn-based dungeon crawler.

…And make those players agonize a lot more upon losing them (even if you can just re-hire identical copies later).

    Not a problem, I don’t mind. :>

Also, haha, we’ll see what ‘good job’ I do with promotion down the road if/when I try to do more. I’ll see if I can draw some more, but I’ve been working more on this story… but I’m super worried that it’s actually gonna be considered terrible because it’s super character-centered and not game-plot-centered. It contains no (proper) expedition activity, and is all town/outskirts faffing around so far. My writing direction is… why retread the game’s existing campaign when you can just play the game…? Other people will be writing that (and have already done a damn good job) and that’s not my style… but I don’t know if people will appreciate such a departure in any capacity.

    Small-community anxiety. Weh. :c

I’m also not sure if, should I get the courage to post it, I should post it in this thread or make a new one for it…

Yeah, I’m pretty close to posting what I have of it (reactions from friends have been mixed on pacing, but generally positive overall), but the first chapter really doesn’t stand on its own anymore, so I’m waiting to finish at least the second chapter and have some proofreading before doing anything with it here.

I would first have to learn to draw backgrounds. :< I’ve barely crested the ability to paint them roughly, applying such a stark and constrasty style is beyond my current capability. Someday, though~
