Baignard opened his eyes. Slowly lifting his heavy body, he peered into the black. His eyes adjusted to the darkness through the small holes in his helmet. Dozens of still bodies floated in the bile. Baignard stood silently, his head aching.

    “Hello?” His voice cracked.

Hearing a squeal from down the corridor Baignard snatched at the bloody axe floating nearby. He stuck to the shadows, his boots sloshing in the filth. Baignard tried not to attract any unwanted attention as he sneaked towards the door. His belt tugged – his hook had caught on a bloodstained cloth – a body towed behind him. He quietly squatted, pulling the hook from her shirt.

“Courcy?…” he nudged her shoulder. Face down in the murky water, she drifted slightly away from him, otherwise remaining motionless. Baignard’s eyes watered. He wished it was from the repugnant stench. The rotting door creaked open, interrupting his sobbing…

(Thanks very much! I also added a ‘character sheet’ for Baignard and Courcy on the Darkest Roleplay Character forum. I’m not sure if I wanna make Courcy dead or not. haha!)

(Thanks again! I figured it wouldn’t be too long before someone jumped into the story here. But since no one had, I thought, heck, I’ll make a picture. I totally understand, however, that no one wants to go into the warrens… It’s an evil place.)

A cloaked figure staggered forward from the bog-fume, gait and stance betraying his struggle against the thick sludge he pulled himself through.

He froze at the sight of mixed bodies before him, not yet seeing it for what it was. Wearily readying himself, he pulled a small leather pack from his pouch, a green glow pouring from it’s seams.

“St-stay back! I do not fear you!” He lied.

Baignard reeled back, still clinging to Courcy’s limp body. The glowing figure was at first startling, shrouded in robes with a beastly pointed mask. Though surprised by the intrusion, Baignard was relieved that the figure was not one of the horrifying swine creatures he’d encountered before.

“Hello!” Baignard called to the silhouette. Ignoring possible danger, he cried. “My friend needs help, please!” Another sharp squeal echoed through the dingy halls. He quieted. “I need her to live… please help me.”

Adeney quickly returned the grenade to his pouch, trudging through the muck toward the man. He eyed him, noting the dressings of a bounty hunter.

“How long has she been in the sewage?” He asked, looking over the knife wound in her back. He poured a tonic upon it to remove what grime the medicines could reach. He checked the hellion’s pulse, nodding to affirm her unstable but existent heartbeat.

“I – I’m not sure. We were fighting… I think I was hit. I just came to.” Baignard mumbled, scouring the room for signs of the beasts. We need to get her out of here. WE need to get out of here. He reached for his map. Missing. His head began to ache again, and he stumbled.

Teetering on the brink – facing the abyss…

“I don’t know the way…” Struggling to stand, he gently lifted Courcy, carrying her on his shoulder. In the other hand, he readied his axe.

“Steady yourself.” Adeney spoke, holding an arm out. “Your situation will only worsen if you drop into the muck.”
He looked to the body of a highwayman, floating face first in the pools of filth. The doctor shivered and his stomach twisted at the thought of the cursed rot intruding into the body’s mouth and nose.
“Poor lad. With any luck his eyes were cl…”
Adeney paused, recognizing the knife wound in the highwayman’s shoulder blade.

He approached, examining it thoroughly. “This was made by a tanning dagger.” He turned to the bounty hunter. “Was this man of your party?”

“Yes. He and some woman were headed here, so Courcy and I…” Baignard paused. “My name is Baignard, by the way. This is Courcy…” He nodded his head toward the Hellion he carried on his shoulder.

“We journeyed here with them. ‘Strength in numbers’, we had hoped.” His eyes floated over the highwayman’s corpse, trying to forget his friendly face. A pointed hat drifted in the sludge, a flayed hand protruded nearby. “I believe that was the woman…” Baignard’s head dropped. Why had I lived?

“I guess she was unsuccessful.” Adeney said, observing the butchered hand, rend by savagery. The minced meat palm, sprouting familiar fingers left a sick taste in his mouth.

“I still don’t know your name..” Baignard spoke softly. “What are you doing down here? Are you by yourself? Do you know the way out?” He didn’t mean to spout and stutter these questions, but it kept his mind off of the horrors he had faced before.
